This term, we launched an exciting new esports extracurricular program and we are already making waves in the school’s competitive gaming world. Far from casual gaming, our esports teams are developing real skills that translate directly into academic and life success.

Currently, we’re competing in multiple leagues with impressive results. Our three Fortnite trios teams and Overwatch squad are dominating their respective competitions through the ASGL School League. In just four weeks of competition, our Fortnite teams have achieved two number-one weekly finishes and regular top-five placements, earning St Joseph’s Marist College shoutouts during live streams and being heralded as “teams to look out for”. Our Overwatch team remains unbeaten in their league, while our Brawlhalla player sits at the top of their group standings. We’re also developing a Dota 2 team as league offerings expand, and are looking to venture into as many competitive games as possible.

What makes this program special isn’t just the winning records – it’s watching students develop critical thinking, strategic planning, teamwork, and communication skills under pressure. During our twice-weekly practice sessions and weekly matches, students learn to analyse complex situations quickly, coordinate with teammates, and adapt strategies in real time. Their dedication and work ethic are remarkable, with students actively seeking feedback and putting in extra hours to improve.

The school has provided excellent support with our dedicated gaming setup, and we’ve also facilitated students competing from their own devices, making this accessible across all Senior School grade levels. Though Grade 11s are currently our most active participants, we welcome students from all grades who are ready to commit to improvement and teamwork.

Looking forward, we are working towards qualifying for the African Gaming Championship this July – and it’s looking very promising! Here we’ll compete against the country’s best teams for a substantial prize pool and ultimate success. This is a major tournament that will truly test everything our players have learned.

Whether they’re preparing for championship competition or just starting their esports journey, every pupil is building skills that will serve them well beyond the game. For anyone interested in supporting this exciting program as it develops, please feel free to reach out.
